Walt Drenth was appointed the director of the men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs at Michigan State on June 2, 2006 after having been the assistant men’s track & field coach since 2004.
Walt’s career as a coach has been nothing short of impressive. In his almost 30 years of coaching, he has been awarded Coach of the Year honors 22 times across four conferences and five regions. Furthermore, he has coached over 382 Academic All-Big ten honorees, over 109 All-Americans, 39 NCAA Championship berths, 61 Academic All-Americans, 72 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, over 30 Conference Championships, and 20 NCAA Top 20 finishes.
His most recent accomplishment happened this past season when coached MSU to our first National Champion in the Steeplechase in school history. Leah O’Connor set a school record that day when she won the National Championship crossing the finish line in 9:36.43. She is the first Spartan outdoor champion since 1997.
Walt has helped elevate the Spartan track & field programs greatly as he heads into his 9th year as the director. Since Drenth has been the head, MSU has had 163 regional qualifiers, 44 school-record holders, 61 national qualifiers, 26 All-Big Ten finishers, 64 All-Americans and now 1 National Champion.
Walt is a graduate of Central Michigan University, earning his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1981 and his masters in Physical Education in 1990. Drenth and his wife, Cara have two children, Emma and Gerrit. Emma is a member of the MSU track & field and cross-country program.
