Dean Look, a native of Lansing, MI, was a quarterback for Michigan State and also a member of the baseball team. He played under legendary coaches Duffy Daugherty and John Kobs. He was named the baseball team’s MVP in 1958 and was a first team All-Big Ten selection after leading the team in six different offensive categories. In 1959, he made the switch from a halfback to a quarterback for the football team. The moved seemed to go well after being the only player in the country to be named to UPI’s backfield of the week three times. After receiving All-American honors, he was a first round draft pick by the Denver Broncos of the AFL. Instead he went on and signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox and had his major league debut in 1961.
Look is most notable for his 29 years of service as an NFL official. He was the side judge who signaled touchdown on the historical Joe Montana to Dwight Clark pass better known as “The Catch” during the 1982 NFC Championship game between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. As an official, Look was assigned three super bowls- Super Bowl XIII in 1979, Super Bowl XV in 1981, and Super Bowl XXVII in 1993.
Look was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 2007.
